ANIMAL GESTURE

Gesture is an important part of movement. If you have an animal that has some basic makeup similar to earthly creatures, and you'll find that they probably will to at least some small degree, then you can borrow from earthly animal-type gestures. There will be an even greater amount of variation in gesture (movement as it conveys feeling/personality/meaning) than ambulatory movement (related to walking). On their own, humans primarily move forward along the ground by crawling, walking or running. Although there's some variation in that, there's tremendously more variation in how we jump, throw, sit, stand, stretch, squat, lean, express anger, triumph or even relax in a reclined position. Each one of those gestures displays a feeling. Humans aren't the only creatures that express feeling in a gesture. There's no mistaking the feeling expressed by a wary deer, a hissing cat or a quizzical puppy. With all the nature documentaries out there, artists in this era have abundant visual information they can use for study. If you have access to one, go to your local zoo.
